The Work Between

I set a deadline for publishing this website.

My birthday.

I needed to set a due date so that I would stick with this idea and see it through. My birthday felt like a good opportunity to not only have a firm date set, but to also reflect on the courage it would take to put these ideas out in the world.

I don’t know where they will land. I’m trusting that there are others who will read these words and have something that resonates.

These questions and thoughts have been sitting with me for a while. I’ve spent most of my career inside nonprofit organizations - designing programs, navigating funding requirements, and trying to create impact in systems that don’t always talk to each other.

Right now, the work feels heavy. Funding structures are changing rapidly. Programming can barely keep up with demand, as society challenges turn more acute. It’s painfully obvious that many of the systems we rely on don’t work for everyone - and in most cases, were never designed to.

At times, it feels like it’s us against the world.

I want to create a space where others who want to do things differently can connect and learn together. Where enough psychological safety exists that we speak aloud the ideas and questions that have been lingering in the backs of our minds. Where we honestly share our observations and experiences in order to find patterns and leverage points. Where we take care of one another.

This isn’t a place to come if you’re looking for easy answers.

But I hope you’ll find something here.

Learning.

Connection.

Growth.

This is a place to come with questions. The Work Between is a space for asking questions, exploring ideas, and figuring things out together. Context matters too much for simple solutions. This is a space of discussion, innovation, and, most important, intention.

Whether you’re reading The Blog or joining The Conversation, I hope you find something meaningful here.

Maybe you’re a nonprofit person too.

Maybe you work in government - the close cousin.

Maybe you’re a funder, seeking a better way forward.

Maybe you’ve been doing this work for decades.

Maybe you’re just beginning.

Maybe you’re finding your way back to it.

No matter what, you belong here.

Because the work happens between:

Between individuals.

Between organizations.

Between sectors.

Between systems.

And sometimes, between our heads and our hearts.

Welcome to The Work Between.

I’m so glad you’re here.

This idea is part of ongoing exploration through The Work Between - a space for nonprofits, funders and communities to reflect on how we learn together and shift systems for the common good.
